Newly Filed Medical Malpractice Lawsuit: Yet Another Preventable Medication Error at Montifiore Hospital

By Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP

Our medical malpractice team just filed a suit in the Bronx involving an infant who was born with a congenital heart condition called Wolff Parker White syndrome – – an abnormally fast heart rate. It’s very easily treated with medication. The infant was an in-patient at Montefiore Hospital but repeatedly received adult size doses of the medication to treat the Wolff Parker White syndrome. The doses were so big it caused the baby to go into cardiac arrest. Sadly, the baby was not resuscitated quickly enough to prevent loss of oxygen to the brain. He’s lucky he survived but now at 2 ½ years old he suffers from developmental and cognitive delays due to the loss of oxygen. His best hope is getting Early Intervention education. Injuries to children are often difficult to evaluate as children are not able to articulate their problems. Our medical malpractice team includes an experienced nurse who often works personally with families to discuss what a child’s medical evaluations show as the child grows. The medical malpractice partner, Thomas Giuffra, will discuss with families what may be potential future financial needs to medical treatment.
