A California jury recently held Ford liable for $45 million in a case involving a 5 year-old boy rendered a paraplegic by a rear seat lap belt he was wearing in a 1996 Ford Windstar accident. By failing to restrain the occupant's torso while restraining the hips, these defective belts cause the occupant (usually a child) to fold over the belt and suffer severe back injuries. The defect has been well known for decades. These belts are found in the center of the rear seat in many vehicles and are especially common in GM and Ford cars.
