This is a device which pumps pain relievers right into the spine via a catheter and is intended to reduce pain or aid with movement disorders.  Recently the FDA announced that it had cited Medtronic for various violations arising out of problems with this device.  This includes breaking of the catheter, medication overdosing, and motor stalling.  Some of these problems are due to computer failures.  Similar problems had led to an earlier recall of this device.  We are studying cases of persons who had to have these devices replaced due to these failures or who suffered injuries due to the breakdown.
