| Zirconia Ceramic Femoral Heads | The ball portion of a total hip replacement of the type known as zirconia ceramic femoral heads was recalled in Septemer 2001 due to breaking. Nine batches, all with serial numbers beginning with TH, were recalled by the maker, St. Gobain, a French company. When the ceramic ball breaks, it has to be replaced surgically. It was reported that these devices failed because they were manufactured imporperly. The ceramic balls were used by many US companies, including Apex, Biomet, Depuy, Encore, Osteoimplant, Smith & Newpher, Stryker Howmedica Osteonics, and Zimmer. Our firm is using its knowledge acquired form the Sulzer hips problem to apply to these new cases. More information can be obtained from: the FDA web site.

| Sulzer Implants | Sulzer hip and knee metal implants were found in 2000 to have an oily contamination which prevents the bone from uniting with the implant as is required for the replacement to work. As a consequence, there has been joint loosening, pain, and often the need to replace the part. The presence of the oil was known to Sulzer, who has admitted fault. There was also a delay in making the recall. We have started many suits for Sulzer victims, which are now part of a national settlement.

| Lead | Lead paint continues to be a major health risk despite the fact that it was banned long ago. Many old buildings still contain lead paint, often in poor condition. New York and other cities with a large amount of old housing present severe risks to lead paint exposure to children, usually in the form of chips or dust. Depending on the level of lead in the person's blood, injuries vary from mild learning disabilities to severe brain damage and death. |
