Stevens Johnson Syndrome / Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a potentially deadly skin disease that usually results from a drug reaction.  Another form of the disease is called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis(TEN), which also usually results from a drug-related reaction.  Drugs that have been linked to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome include Bextra, Celebrex, Lamictal, Motrin, ibuprofen, Advil, Allopurinol, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, barbiturates, anticonvulsants, and sulfa containing antibiotics.

These skin diseases can cause massive pain, suffering and anxiety.  Symptoms of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome are blistering, skin rash, difficulty breathing, fever, cough, malaise, excessive tearing or "stickiness" of eyes, sores in the genital tract causing painful urination, swelling and lesions of gums, tongue, or lips.

Symptoms can occur slowly or aggressively.  If mild at first, symptoms can be misdiagnosed by doctors and the conditions worsen before treatment is given.  SJS can completely resolve or become a chronic condition.

We are bringing suits for the development of SJS from a variety of drugs, including Bextra and Lamictal.  In some instances the drug label warnings were not adequate, but in other instances the prescribing doctor is at fault, setting up a medical malpractice case.
