Doctors Reap Profits From Thousands of Unnecessary Surgeries

By: Caroline Mason

It has been concluded that 10-20% of surgeries may be unnecessary.

More than 100 doctors have paid to settle or close claims from patients saying they received a surgery that they did not need. Many of these settlements involve claims of "serious permanent injury or death."

The issue is that doctors actually make more of a profit off of unnecessary surgeries because they make money for each procedure they perform.

It is difficult to gauge how serious this issue is because hospitals are not required to track data on these types of surgical mistakes and many patients do not sue their doctors.

This issue is all but hidden and must be addressed because of the toll that it takes on people.
