A new warning has surfaced for Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Eye Ointment which is an over-the-counter product manufactured by Global Pharma Healthcare Private Limited. The same company behind the EzriCare (which was also recalled) and Delsam Pharma artificial tears products.

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa – Dangerous Bacteria in Many Household Products and Foods

Pseudomonas is a common bacterium that can cause diseases and can be found in many different environments including soils, water, and plant or animal tissue. However, people with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, and underlying lung conditions that are exposed to these bacteria may face a risk of infection. The concern for this bacteria is increasing as it has been found present in several recalled products such as:

• Fabuloso (all-in-one cleaner)
• The Laundress (laundry detergent and fabric conditioner)
• EzriCare Artificial Tears.

These recalls are concerning as more products with this bacteria are resurfacing with serious injuries to its clients. Patients who have used any of the recalled products and who have concerns about their health should contact a healthcare provider immediately.

FDA Warning

The FDA has urged Americans to stop using the product, citing the risk of bacterial contamination. This warning comes at the wake of an outbreak earlier this year of highly drug-resistant bacteria that hospitalized and blinded some patients. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a nationwide health alert over an outbreak of a “rare, extensively drug-resistant” Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria.

Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Eye Ointment in the United States

The FDA had already faulted the manufacturer for multiple violations and banned imports into the United States of its items. However, the agency has not disclosed what prompted them to expand[i] its warning, and a spokesperson for the regulator declined to share additional details on the “ongoing matter.” An Indian news outlet NDTV reported that the company (based in India) was subjected to a late-night inspection earlier this month and has since suspended production of the Delsam Pharma and EzriCare products.

Injuries and Investigations

Like the EzriCare products, the Delsam Pharma Artificial Eye Ointment is still listed for sale on several websites including Amazon, where it ranks among the top 50 best-selling “dry eye relief” products on the site. However, as of February 21, 2023, the CDC[ii] has identified 58 patients, and 13 states were added to the list of jurisdictions with cases (Including New York). At least 16 patients have been hospitalized from their infections so far, five were permanently blinded, one had to have an eyeball surgically removed and a patient died in Washington state after the infection spread to their bloodstream.
