Why Risperdal Causes Gynecomastia
Risperdal is classified as an atypical antipsychotic drug belonging to the chemical class of benzisoxazole derivatives. It works as a dopamine antagonist, blocking dopamine receptors found in the body. Permanent Breasts have developed in adolescents and men.
Gynecomastia is one of the side effects of Risperdal. It is a condition where males develop abnormally large breasts because of an increase in breast tissue, not excess fat. Gynecomastia is caused by an increase in the hormone Prolactin which is a possible side effect of Risperdal. Although the breast tissue may reduce on its own, surgical intervention may be necessary.
We are excited to report the first of the Risperdal cases was favorably decided in February, 2015. The Philadelphia state court jury awarded the Plaintiff, who suffered from gynecomastia, $2.5 million. Settlement discussions have begun and a few cases have already been settled.
Risperdal was also involved in a separate case brought by federal officials and state prosecutors in 2012. There Johnson & Johnson agreed to pay $2.2 billion to resolve allegations that it illegally marketed certain drugs to children and the elderly. It was one of the largest health-fraud settlements in history.
