Litigation Against Gilead for Withholding Release of a Safer Drug
Recently, a lawsuit was filed claiming Gilead halted drug development based on tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) as far back as 2004 to protect patent profits based on tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). According to the lawsuit, Gilead did this despite knowing that TAF-based meds were safer.
The lawsuit contends that patients who took the TDF medications were exposed to kidney and bone mineralization problems associated with the older drugs, which require significantly higher doses than the newer, TAF-based regimens do.
Gilead’s TDF medications are: Viread, Truvada, Atripla, Complera and Stribild. The safer, lower-dose TAF medications are: Genvoya , Odefsey and Descovy. The TAF medications are associated with fewer and less serious side effects.
