Drug Liability Attorneys in New York City

A study published in May 2014 found that Viagra users appeared to have almost twice the risk of melanoma as non-users. While the public has been kept in the dark about this, the medical researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School started this study in 2000! Our firm has a long history of litigation against Pfizer (Viagra), Eli Lilly (Cialis) and GlaxoSmithKline (Levitra). If you or someone you know has suffered from melanoma while taking these drugs, the lawyers at Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo & Plotkin LLP are here to help you explore your legal options.

The lead researcher, Wen-Qing Li, PhD, reviewed data from 2000 to 2010 collected in the Health Professionals' Follow-Up Study. Even before 2000, doctors were aware that phosphodiestrase 5A (PDG5A), which is a major ingredient in Viagra, may be associated with melanoma because of PDG5A's tendency to promote melanin synthesis. Upon release of this report, the editor of JAMA Dermatology, June K. Robinson, MD, suggested that doctors who prescribe Viagra should check patients regularly for melanoma.

Melanoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma

These three cancers were discussed the study. Dermatologists are trained to pay particular attention to skin areas exposed to the sun. There are three layers to skin: epidermis, dermis, and subcutis to be inspected. Physicians also look for "pre-cancerous" signs and take proactive measures in removing potential dangerous growths. Biopsies are commonly done. Sometimes doctors will refer to "ABCDE" factors:

  • A is for asymmetrical shape. Look for moles with irregular shapes, such as two very different-looking halves.
  • B is for irregular border. Look for moles with irregular, notched or scalloped borders - characteristics of melanomas.
  • C is for changes in color. Look for growths that have many colors or an uneven distribution of color.
  • D is for diameter. Look for new growth in a mole larger than 1/4 inch (about 6 millimeters).
  • E is for evolving.

Who is at Risk?

The study, "Sildenafil Use and Increased Risk of Incident Melanoma in US Men: A Prospective Cohort Study," called for more investigation. The study noted that some of the men developing melanoma tended to be over 65 years old, obese and suffered from blistering sunburns as a child.
