New York Zostavax Attorneys

What is Zostavax?

Produced and sold by Merck & Co., Inc., Zostavax is a shingles vaccine that contains a small quantity of the live virus herpes zoster. In May 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the vaccine for sale for the purpose of preventing shingles among adults age 60 and over. In March 2011, the FDA approved the use of the vaccine for adults age 50 through 59 as well.

FDA Recommendations for Using Zostavax

FDA studies have shown that, among individuals age 60 and over, Zostavax reduces the occurrence of shingles by approximately 50 percent. These studies have also revealed that the vaccine is most effective among those age 60 to 69 and least effective among those age 80 and over. The FDA recommends against usage of Zostavax by people age 50 and under or who are immuno-compromised, pregnant, or allergic to the vaccine.
