Have You Suffered Sexual Abuse or Physical Assault by Using Uber?
Personal Injury Lawyers Serving New York, Manhattan & More
The growth of Uber and other transportation-network companies has exploded in recent years. In the five years since its creation, Uber has expanded to operating in 49 U.S. cities and 35 countries around the world. The service uses an app to conveniently connect people in need of a ride with drivers. A good portion of people in New York City use companies like Uber and Lyft to avoid drunk driving after a night out. However, due to poor hiring practices and inadequate background checks, people who use ride-share services do not always get home safely.

Insufficient Background Checks
A recent investigation showed that Uber's background checks failed to catch an ex-con with a violent past, Beverly Locke. One short month after filling out the necessary forms to become an Uber driver, she was offered the job. Uber's background check entirely missed her 20-year rap sheet, which included charges of burglary, criminal threats with the intent to cause death, and cocaine possession. Locke had also pulled a girl out of a car and beaten her close to death.
The same investigation showed that Uber hired a man with a prior conviction for reckless driving-a man who later hit and killed a 6 year old girl in San Francisco. Another man was arrested for battery, and held a conviction for DUI - and still managed to pass Uber's background check. The lack of in-depth background checks is especially concerning as Uber approves some 10,000 drivers a year.

A Special Message to Victims of Sexual Abuse
Having handled a broad spectrum of cases related to sexual abuse, we know it is unspeakably scary to have experienced the most intimate of violations. You may not want to think about what happened, much less speak of it aloud; you may not even believe you were a victim at all. However, if you can imagine a loved one going through a similar situation, your advice might be something like "be strong" and "let yourself ask for help." The best way to get help is to build a support network to help you through your trauma.
Any hurt, shame, or embarrassment you feel right now will dissipate over time. The important thing is that you share right away so that the people responsible face the consequences of their action.
