In spite of spending more on healthcare than other states, New York’s hospitals have received low marks from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS. These quality ratings analyze a range of quality information on important health care topics, like readmissions and deaths after heart attacks or pneumonia.
A total of 36 hospitals across New York, or about 25%, received the highest A safety grade from Leapfrog, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, while 18 hospitals received the second-lowest D grade. Two hospitals received an F.
New York state overall ranked 31st worst in the country in terms of hospital safety, according to Leapfrog’s latest spring 2025 grades.
New York’s statewide performance also fell far short of top-performing states that had “straight A” percentages ranging between 20% and 29%, including Utah, Virginia, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey.
