A majority female jury has convicted the Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein in the MeToo sex crimes case. This retrial was the result the initial conviction 5 years ago was overturned.
However, a judge declared a mistrial in the third-degree rape count in Harvey Weinstein’s sex crimes retrial on Thursday, after the jury foreman refused to return to deliberate.
The mistrial comes a day after the jury convicted Weinstein on one count of criminal sex act involving Mimi Haley and acquitted him of another count of criminal sex act involving Kaja Sokola.
An attorney for Weinstein, Arthur Aidala, said they plan to appeal the conviction in the retrial. A new trial date has not been set, but lawyers will return for a status hearing on July 2 to discuss the future of the case.
Harvey Weinstein’s legal troubles are not limited to New York. He has been accused of the sexual abuse of women on the west coast as well.
Sexual abuse cases such as Harvey Weinstein and Sean Combs are not about sex. They are about power, manipulation, and the control of a weaker (usually someone in a subordinate position) person. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon experience in our society. I have been representing survivors of such abuse for the majority of my legal career. I am proud to represent them and assist them in regaining their power, their dignity, and their lives.
If you are a survivor of sexual abuse or exploitation, you are not alone. At Rheingold, Giuffra, Ruffo, Plotkin & Hellman LLP, we have represented survivors in some of the nation’s most high-profile civil sexual abuse cases — helping them reclaim their voices, dignity, and power.
