Edward Gene Smith, 50, admitted to attacking his victims at his luxury apartment opposite Central Park, as well as amassing a stash of more than 9,000 child sexual abuse images, as part of his twisted spree.
Prosecutors stated that Smith was able to hide behind his reputation as a Harvard-educated, successful financier to lure women into relationships that quickly turned criminal and violent.
Smith’s crimes were not compulsive acts of a sexual nature but well-planned attacks on unsuspecting victims. He ended up pleading guilty to only four counts: drugging a victim with intent to rape her, enticing another victim to travel to New York for sex, receiving child pornography and obstruction of justice. With the plethora of evidence and the number of victims, it is difficult to know why he was convicted on only four counts. However, the rapist is 50 years old and he won’t leave prison until he is 80 years old.
