Doctor receives major grant to study perinatal brain injuries

By Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP

A perinatal brain injury is brain damage that occurs before the child is born, usually during the delivery process. The delivery process, despite all of the recent medical advances, remains incredibly traumatic on mothers and babies. Furthermore, doctors are prone to commit disastrous mistakes which can significantly impact the health of the child.

To address some of these deficiencies, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Dr. Barbara Stonestreet $2.8 million dollars to study effective strategies to treat birth-related brain injuries.

Brain injuries are responsible for a variety of development disabilities including cerebral palsy and neurodevelopmental delay. These injuries will cause lifetime costs and burdens on the family and society.

Furthermore, Dr. Stonestreet received a $881,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health for this research. Dr. Stonestreet is an accomplished specialist and professor and hopes that her research will result in actionable treatments for these children.

Birth injuries are notoriously difficult to catch and treat. If your child is exhibiting unusual symptoms or developmental issues, then you should seek a second opinion from a doctor. If you determine that your child’s injuries were sustained during delivery, you may want to speak to an attorney to review your options for compensation. Compensation is the last thing on your mind however it is important to consider that you will need to pay for your child’s care. A lawyer can help you secure funds to ensure your child has the money to get the medical help he or she needs.
