Mirena IUD Litigation Consolidated in New Jersey
Written By: Rheingold, Giuffra, Ruffo & Plotkin LLP
Our firm is now investigating claims for women who have been injured due to the Mirena IUD contraceptive device. Poor design results in the IUD migrating from the uterus, resulting in perforation and embedment injuries.
Marketed as a safe contraceptive since 2000 by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, poor results and medical complications have led to a wave of litigation in Superior Court of New Jersey Law Division, Morris County, before Judge Jessica R. Mayer.
Our pharmaceutical litigation lawyers have experience before this judge in the gadolinium product liability consolidated litigation. She is a detail oriented, "hands on" judge who is deeply committed to all aspects of litigation, no matter how small the detail.

Mirena Side Effects: Embedding, Migration, Infection & Infertility
The Mirena IUD is a plastic device which releases the hormone levonorgestrel. A string at the bottom of the IUD extends through the cervix into the vagina. A common injury our clients have is the device embedding into the uterine wall. The treating gynecologist is unable to manually retrieve the IUD, resulting in the need for a hospitalized surgical removal. If untreated, or even as a result of the surgery, women can suffer from life-threatening infections. Some women report the inability to become pregnant after the surgical removal.
The most serious side effects we have seen to date involve migration of the IUD from the uterus, completely traveling through the uterine wall. The IUD then migrates within the lower intestinal area, eventually embedding into another organ. This requires a more urgent and serious surgical interventions.

Early discovery into Mirena Bayer documents will start soon. We will investigate whether inadequate and contradictory warnings given to doctors and patients. One issue is reportedly that some warnings discussed side effects only related to the time of insertion but failed to address post-insertion issues.
