Melissa Rivers files medical malpractice suit over mother’s death

By Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP

She was a legend and a pioneer who had forced her way into the male-dominated world of stand up comedy through sheer power of will, an acerbic wit and self effacing humor. One generation knew Joan Rivers as a comic and talk show host, the next perhaps as a QVC saleswoman and another as the guardian of the red carpet. She had an unstoppable work ethic and was always ready with a wise crack, especially when it came to her looks and the lengths she went to keep them.

What makes her recent death so tragic is the fact that it could have been prevented. At least, that’s what Joan’s daughter Melissa Rivers alleges in her medical malpractice lawsuit against the clinic in New York where her mother died. The lawsuit alleges that the doctors could have performed a tracheotomy to restore breathing and save her mothers life, but they didn’t and she died as a result. Rivers says that the decision to file the lawsuit was a difficult one, but she opted for it because she believes no family should have to endure what her family has.

Sadly, this case isn’t an isolated one. Doctor errors and negligence happen all the time and leave victims with disabilities that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. If you have been a victim of medical malpractice, you do have options. An attorney may be able to help you get compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages and pain and suffering.
