Thomas Giuffra Begins Trial in St. Catherine MRSA Case

By Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP

Thomas P. Giuffra, a partner of the firm, is currently engaged in a medical malpractice trial in the Supreme Court of Suffolk County regarding a MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) infection that developed after surgery.

After undergoing a procedure at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, NY, the plaintiff developed a MRSA infection at the site of the surgical incision. It is plaintiff’s contention that despite complaining of pain and a slowly healing wound, the defendant doctor, Alfred Lieffrig, M.D., failed to appropriately manage and treat the MRSA infection.

Last week, Mr. Giuffra finished a thorough and probing questioning of the defendant doctor. The trial continues this week with testimony expected from several physicians as expert witnesses for the plaintiff.
