When the Unthinkable Happens During Surgery

By Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP

When we trust our healthcare to doctors and nurses, especially when facing surgery, we never consider the possibility of serious errors occurring during the procedure. We place our lives in the hands of highly skilled doctors and medical staff. We understand the physical risks involved in surgery, and they are usually explained to us in detail before we are put under anesthesia. However, nobody discusses the possibility of human error on behalf of the medical professionals. This is simply not usually considered and the thought of it may even seem irrational.

As frightening it may seem, surgical errors do happen. Some examples of mistakes that can, and have, happened are anesthesia errors, wrong-site surgery, improper use of medical equipment, or, as unimaginable as it may seem, removal of the wrong organs. What is even more concerning is that most of these errors could have been avoided. Studies have shown that many of these surgical errors have been caused by pure arrogance on the part of the surgeon who failed to follow proper procedures.

If you or a family member has been the victim of a surgical error, it is important to hold those responsible accountable. While you are dealing with the physical and emotional impact of such an error, eliminating financial worry will help alleviate some of the pressure.

Proving medical malpractice and negligence relating to surgical errors in not easy. It requires a very thorough investigation by a knowledgeable attorney and their team who have experience dealing with such issues, as well as a successful track record of winning these cases on behalf of their clients. This will make all the difference in ensuring you receive the compensation you deserve.
