Bronx Woman Falls Through Bathroom Floor into Basement of Apartment Building

The NY Post is reporting that a Bronx woman fell through the bathroom floor of her apartment at 204 Shakespeare Ave. in Highbridge and plummeted to the basement of the six-story building.  It was not immediately known of her condition.

The building in question has been determined to be "perilous to life" and uninhabitable so the residents have had to vacate the building until necessary repairs are made.

The accident left a 2-foot by 4-foot hole in the bathroom floor, according to a city Department of Buildings vacate order Sunday.

Residents of the site said they have previously complained of hazardous conditions in their homes and building neglect.

“Every apartment has something broken,” said a female first-floor neighbor who asked not to be named. “My apartment has many things broken. Very dangerous. They fix nothing!”

Asked if the building’s super was available to speak, a neighbor said an appearance was unlikely.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident.  The state of disrepair of New York City's buildings, especially those under the administration of the city's Housing Authority is deplorable.  They pose a severe risk to life and limb and should never be tolerated.  If the Housing Authority doesn't take immediate action, other city officials need to step in to fix this situation.
