Is Wegovy Safe? Potential Intestinal Obstructions

By Nairis Pimentel

You may have heard about Hollywood and other people using Wegovy as a weight loss drug, but there have also been concerns about side effects. Now, news reports are discussing if Wegovy weight-loss shots have potentially deadly side effects.

Wegovy mimics the effects of GLP-1[1], a hormone that slows down the movement of food through the intestines. This creates the potential risk of causing the small intestine to become enlarged and fibrotic as a loose spring, which may increase the possibility of a deadly obstruction in the digestive system.

In experiments performed on mice, the enlargement of the intestine occurred approximately after 20 months of taking GLP-1 drugs. This brings another concerning fact: clinical trials for Wegovy only went up to 16 months and deadly side effects were overlooked.

Could Wegovy Users Have Possible Intestinal Complications?

Researchers[2] are saying that users of these types of drugs are up to four times more likely to suffer intestinal obstruction. This occurs when a blockage prevents food and liquid from passing through the intestines. If left untreated, intestinal obstruction can cause serious complications such as:

  • Tissue death
  • Peritonitis (potentially deadly infection within the abdomen)
  • Death (responsible for around 30,000 deaths in the US every year)

Weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and the Ozempic drug (associated with gallbladder disease), became popular in the pharmaceutical industry being bought by clients who could later become victims of their potential risks.
