Robotic Surgery Tear Injuries & Lawsuits

Advocacy from Our New York Robotic Surgery Malpractice Lawyers

The medical malpractice lawyers at Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP are accepting clients who have suffered tears and other serious injuries from the da Vinci surgical system. Our firm will consider filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer of these robots for failing to properly train surgeons on using the device, for design flaws, and for other product liability allegations.

Types of Tear Injuries

If not controlled properly, the robotic arms of the da Vinci can nick healthy organs and pull on blood vessels and other tissues, causing them to tear. The surgeon is responsible for controlling the robot and may be held liable for failure to control the robot. In other instances, however, if the doctor did not receive proper training or if the doctor was prematurely certified, the manufacturer may be held liable.

The most common tear injuries associated with these robots include:

  • Intestinal tears
  • Urethral tears
  • Uterine tears
  • Blood vessel tears
  • Bowel evisceration

Often, these tears go unnoticed at the time of the surgery. As a result, many patients will suffer infections or other complications during recovery that require medical intervention and possibly additional surgery to correct the issue. Some patients may suffer long-term complications from the tears.
