IIHS Introduces New Crash Test

By: George Mikhail

While the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has several car crash tests to assist consumers in purchasing safe vehicles, many people still suffer serious injuries and even death as a result of car crashes. The IIHS has recently released results of a new crash test they pinned as "small overlap crash test".

The crash test is a 40 mph front-impact collision on the driver side, designed to be more realistic to actual car crashes. Out of the eleven 2012 premium sedans tested, the only two cars that scored a top rating of "Good" were the Acura TL and the Volvo S60. Infinity G was rated as "Acceptable", and the Acura TSX, BMW 3 series, Volkswagen CC, and Lincoln MKZ all scored "Marginal". Earning the lowest score, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4, Lexis ES and IS all scored "Poor".

The IIHS has indicated that it will there will be additional tests evaluating mid-size sedans. Many critics of stringent safety tests claim cars are getting higher in price and heavier in weight to meet the standards of these crash tests.
