Families of New York Accident Victims Featured in NYC Campaign Against Reckless Driving
Written By: Rheingold, Giuffra, Ruffo & Plotkin LLP
The New York City Department of Transportation launched an advertising campaign in areas where dangerous driving is common. "Reckless Driving Kills" public service advertisements are going up on bus shelters and billboards in areas which are particularly impacted by dangerous drivers. Trial lawyer firms like ours welcome the advertisements as an effort by the NYC Department of Transportation to put a human face on the injured and killed victims. The campaign is similar to anti-smoking campaigns which featured photographs of the impact that smoking has on health. It is hoped that seeing the faces of people who have been impacted by reckless driving will cause drivers to operate their vehicles more safely.
As a New York City litigation firm, we are not surprised that 274 New Yorkers died as a result of reckless driving in 2012. Surprisingly, this was the highest number since 2008. The overwhelming majority of the people who lost their lives to reckless drivers were pedestrians and cyclists, often by trucks, taxis and livery cabs. 148 New Yorkers were killed simply when they were crossing the street. The number of people killed by speeders increased this year by 65% or 81 deaths. City officials say pedestrian deaths are likely to increase this year.
