Studies Link Distracted Doctors to Medical Errors

By Rheingold Giuffra Ruffo Plotkin & Hellman LLP

According to a series of recent studies, physicians, and surgical staff are increasingly distracted in the operating room. The surgical team is found surfing the web while performing procedures which led to a higher instance of medical and surgical errors. This post will go over the implication of these studies and how they may impact you.

Doctors are expected to multi-task during surgeries. They must track their patient’s vital signs, pay attention to tool placement, and a dozen other things, however, they should not multitask on things that are not critical to the surgery. Some people even report seeing doctors update their Facebook status and shop on Amazon while performing operations.

Furthermore, doctors are taking phone calls. Surgical technicians, including heart monitor techs, are making cell phone calls during surgery. Physicians and hospitals face liability if a patient is injured because a member of the surgical team was distracted.

In one case out of Colorado, the plaintiff alleged that the doctor made at least ten personal calls during his surgery.

If you were injured because your doctor was careless or negligent, then you may want to speak to a lawyer. You shouldn’t have to pay for your injuries, including your medical treatment and continued lost wages because your doctor wasn’t doing her job properly. A lawyer may be able to help you get the recovery you need to pay for your medical bills. The sooner you get the treatment you need, the sooner you can get your life back on track.
