Manufacturing Defects in Titanium Bicycles

We have represented several clients in cases in which a titanium bicycle was manufactured defectively. A manufacturing defect can occur in carbon fiber bicycles or in titanium bicycles.

One disadvantage of using titanium in bicycle frames is that it is difficult to weld properly. Welding titanium parts together requires a process known as Tungsten and Inter Gas (TIG) welding which must be done very carefully to avoid oxygen/nitrogen/hydrogen contamination. If such contamination occurs, the titanium loses its structural integrity and can lead to catastrophic failure when stresses are applied. It is extremely important that only American Welding Society certified welders perform TIG welding. Unfortunately, in our case, the bicycle manufacturer did not use certified welders nor did it adhere to Quality Control methods. This, in addition, to the complex design, ultimately led to catastrophic failure.

To locate potential manufacturing defects in titanium bicycles, the rider must carefully examine his/her bicycle before each ride. Look for any cracks or chips in the paint very carefully. If it is a crack, stresses could cause the bicycle to fail.
