While nearly everyone is by now familiar with Toyota's problems with sudden unintended acceleration, it seems that Ford is now being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the exact same reason. The NHTSA is investigating over 170,000 Ford Freestyle crossover SUVs from model year 2005-2007
The NHTSA was prompted to investigate following the report of 18 crashes due to the acceleration defect, one of which resulted in injury. The defect reportedly causes a "ten foot lunge": a sudden, brief acceleration that can occur when the vehicle is traveling at low speeds. It can be stopped by an application of the brakes, but by the time the brakes are applied it may be too late.
